January 2010

Do you have an angry kid?  Is one or more of your children a challenge to raise?  While I don’t think that I have completely unmanageable children, they are quite a challenge and yes at times I feel like I am at the end of  my rope!   Multiple time outs have become a daily occurrence in this house and I must confess that I have felt beaten down and depressed over the behavior that is displayed in this house.  I was very happy when Legacy Publishing Company contacted me and asked me if I would be willing to try “The Total Transformation Program” by James Lehman and to discuss it here on Because Mom Said So.  What is even more wonderful is that when I asked them to send a second set of the program to give away to a reader/fan of Because Mom Said So, they were very happy to send it along to me.  The Legacy Publishing Company is a fantastic company that offers  personal development products and services for families.  The company’s mission is to provide ideas that improve lives–and judging from this particular program (The Total Transformation) they do just that.  I want to personally thank  The Legacy Publishing Company and my contact at Legacy Publishing Nathan O’Leary for finding Because Mom Said So and for arming me with some very necessary new discipline tools that I can use with my children and for giving me a second program set to offer to a reader/fan.

So who is James Lehman and why should you listen to his program?  James Lehman is one of America’s leading behavioral therapists and for good reason–he gets results!   The Total Transformation program will give you access to the tools he teaches to his own patients in his practice.  Parents who are at a complete loss for how to deal with their troubled children and teens wait for months for an appointment with James Lehman with the hopes that he will help them work through their child’s behavior problems child behavior problems  they are having within their families.  The Total Transformation program makes it possible for all of us to access these tools and begin changing the dynamics within our own families.

What Do I Think Of The Program?

I LOVE IT!   I have used Lehman’s techniques and I have noticed a difference in my kids… not huge, but they are starting to bend with me rather than resist me.  Why not a huge difference?  Probably because it has only been about two weeks since I incorporated the techniques.  I am very hopeful that my boys are on their way to more positive behavior.  I don’t intend to stop using these techniques –this family is too important to me and I don’t intend to abandon something that will make us better.

How I Am Using this Program Myself:

I confess that I got the program about a month ago but didn’t use it right away because I really wanted to be able to sit down and concentrate on it without having to worry about work and having to be interrupted by the kids.  So I waited until Christmas vacation to listen to the cd.  The funniest thing is I didn’t really open it until my 4 year old had a complete melt down that lasted what seemed to me a half hour and ended in him eventually crying himself to sleep because he was so mad at me for not giving him his way.  Exhausted, frustrated, and yes crying because I had had ENOUGH of these melt downs I grabbed the program and tore into it immediately.  I listened while he slept (my other son was with his grandma) and really just concentrated on every word that came out of James Lehman’s mouth.  He said to listen to one cd a week and apply it that way… but I cheated–I listened to 4 that day.  I didn’t know when I would have time again to absorb it all without being interrupted.  The time I spent that day was very valuable.  I learned a lot from him.  I began utilizing his tools that night and will forever more be a James Lehman follower and fan.  I have been listening to the cd’s and RE-LISTENING to them in my car as I drive to work after dropping off the kids at school and as I  wait for the kids to come out of school each day.  The more I listen, the more I get out of it; there is usually something that I realized I missed the first time or something that maybe I didn’t think applied to me but that I realize I can utilize with the behaviors in my pre-k classroom.   By the way—My pre-k class is on it’s way to becoming a new class too.  I am using James’s techniques in my classroom too.   They are working like a charm–even with the more difficult children.  It really is wonderful.

Some important things I learned:

1.  I am not alone!  There are many parents who are dealing with the same thing.

2.  There is an End in sight–a light at the end of the tunnel.

3.  If I stick with this program, my family will continue to grow into a respectful, harmonious family.  NOT PERFECT-but definitely a lot closer to that ideal.

I invite each of you to follow me over the next few weeks as I outline the various Chapters in James Lehman’s workbook and as I discuss some of the keynotes from his Total Transformation Program.

As I write this post I am proud to say that I have had five full days this week of ZERO TIME OUTS for both boys.  This is something I have not been able to say EVER!  I credit this peaceful week to The Total Transformation Program by James Lehman and to myself for sticking to it.

Save More by spending less, This is my 2010 Resolution.  As a single mom who is not earning nearly enough money to make it on my own, I am learning more and more that I NEED TO CUT CORNERS and I need to find ways to stretch what little money I am making.  I decided that I would use this post to form a strategic battle plan for doing just that.     I have been browsing the internet for tips on how to save money and I have found quite a few really good ones, some more practical than others, but all quite valuable tips none the less.  Whether it’s changing car insurance carriers to using coupon codes when shopping, there are several ways to cut down our monthly spending.   Here are some of my own ideas  mixed with some of the favorites I found in online sites like 30 Ways To Save Money

Tip 1.  USE COUPONS AND COUPON Codes.  Because Mom Said So and other blogs and websites now offer links to coupons.  USE THEM– they DO HELP YOU SAVE MONEY!  I use the coupons from my site all the time.  It can save you Upwards of $30 per shopping trip.  I am not just talking groceries either; use coupon codes to save on clothing and home and garden items as well.

Tip 2.  If you must shop for clothing (and sometimes we really do have to buy new clothing because we need it not just because we want it) SHOP THE SALE RACK!  Sure the sale rack is usually a hot mess, but there is a good reason that its always a mess:  SMART PEOPLE have been there before you!  You can really find great steals on the sales racks IF you are willing to roll up your sleeves and dig in.

Tip 3.  Do your Shopping when you know you will be in a rush(I found this one on dumblittleman.com but I live by it myself)  I try to go to CVS and Eckert’s to pick up perscriptions or little necessities in between work and running to get the kids from school.  WHY?  Becuase I know that I don’t have time to browse.  We all know that browsing at the Drug store turns into a small fortune spent.  Just one turn down the make-up aisle can prove deadly to my wallet!  I can’t resist a new lipstick or 3!   Running into the store to pick up ONLY WHAT I NEED while I am in a rush ensures that I won’t browse!

Tip 4-  Make a list prior to shopping and buy ONLY what is ON THE LIST!  Make it a rule and do your best not to break it.  Granted there will probably be something that you spot that you realize that you need, but be sure that you really do NEED the item before breaking the rule.

Tip 5– Avoid eating Dinner out.  It is cheaper to make dinner for four than it is to Buy it at McDonalds and other fast food restaurants PLUS it is so much healthier.

Tip 6– Brown Bag It at Work.  Avoid going out to lunch.  Sure sandwhiches and yogurt are boring but it is cheaper than getting a salad or sandwhich out.

Tip 7–  Try to find cheaper Car insurance! I thought mine was pretty reasonable but with a bit of homework I found a company that was cheaper.

Tip 8–  Buy Used Items.  It’s great that so many stores offer pre-viewed and pre-owned items now.  From clothing to games to books –all can be purchased in used condition.  Make good use of these stores!

Tip 9–  Utilize the Library for entertainment purposes.  Don’t buy books, magazines, or even movies when you can borrow them for free.

Tip 10– Ask friends for hand me down clothing.  Most people are looking for someone to take their old clothing and sometimes even furniture.

Tip 11–Use CASH ONLY!  I have been on a cash only diet since Last January and although it is very difficult to do without credit cards, it really really REALLY is a great feeling when I don’t have credit card bills coming in each month.  I save so much money since I am not paying interest to banks!  It is so liberating!

Tip 12– School lunches for the kids.  It is actually so much cheaper for me to have my boys buy the school luch each week than it is to purchase cold cuts, bread, snacks, and drinks than it is to pay for the school lunch which is definitely more nutritious than the cold-cuts.  (I saw on Good Morning America that children should consume no more than a half a slice of ham or processed meat per week !!  So sandwhiches are not that smart of a choice anyway.)  I am lucky enough to receive half priced lunch for my boys due to my income–$1.25 for 5 days of lunches is a huge savings!  Try it!

Well, I am sure there are a bunch more tips out there!  If you have any that you would like to share, PLEASE do SHARE them with me in the comments section.  We can all help each other save money with this advice!

God Bless

Cheryl
